+ or – before each word. Tell them that they will find out the correct answers after reading the story. After reading the story, let the pupils revise their answers before you give the correct ones.
Developing Interest and Background Concepts
Direct pupils’ attention to the title of the selection and the pictures on pages 23 and 24 of the worktext. Ask: What do you think the title and the pictures say about the story? Have them read and answer the questions in Getting Ready on page 23 of the worktext.
Setting Purposes for Reading
Say: Let us read the story “The Bar of Gold” and find out how the bar of gold helped change the lives of the characters.
Reading the Selection
Guide the pupils in reading the story. Read aloud the first part to them as they silently read along with you. Pause at the question/prediction box and have them answer the questions. Evaluate their answers. Continue reading the story varying the technique: the pupils may read silently or orally; or you may read the story orally with them. Then tell them to answer the questions in the succeeding question/prediction boxes.
Oral Reading
Have the pupils read sentences or paragraphs in the story containing the words given in Teaching Vocabulary/Oral Language. This time, the pupils may decide whether their guesses are correct or not.
Call on volunteers to read passages in the story that contain lessons in life.
